PERIYAR WILDLIFE SANCTUARY established in 1895 is one of the oldest wildlife sanctuaries in India. Located 900m above sea level it offers you the best chance to see elephant in its natural habitat. The sanctuary which was declared a tiger reserve in 1978 is home to many animals including gaur, elephant, tiger, wild pig, barking deer, sambhar, dole, Indian wild dog and many varieties of birds. The Periyar lake is another major attraction of this place. |
